Hermit crabs are social creatures that like to live in large groups, but even if you’re armed with a fierce pair of pincers, life can be risky. Hermit crabs show stress-related behaviour after getting shocked out of their shells, and they can feel pain. Similar to humans, hermit crabs sleep 6-8 hours. Unlike humans, hermit crabs are quite resourceful and use upcycled old shells made by another animals. It is clear that hermit crabs do not enter shells at random, but select shells according to shape, shell opening and weight. A variety of mechanisms such as shell rapping, olfactory signals, and visual cues have been shown to transfer information about the quality of a shell.
