Sea dragons are some of the most ornately camouflaged creatures on the planet. Adorned with gossamer, leaf-shaped appendages over their entire bodies, they are perfectly outfitted to blend in with the seaweed and kelp formations they live amongst. The imitation gold leaf used in this artwork to create leaf-like looking appendices is also known as Dutch metal or Schlag Metal. Imitation gold leaf is typically made of a brass alloy that is then hammered into fine sheets in much the same way as genuine gold leaf. Brass is a copper-based alloy that does not lose its chemical or physical properties in the recycling process. One of the environmental advantages is the ability to reuse brass from recycled materials is a tribute to an industry that is environmentally conscious regarding its use of natural resources.
