Cuttlefish possess up to millions of chromatophores, each of which can be expanded and contracted to produce local changes in skin contrast. By controlling these chromatophores, cuttlefish can transform their appearance in a fraction of a second. They use camouflage to hunt, to communicate and to avoid predators like styrofoam, which is one of the most harmful types of waste that exists today and impacts our planet’s ecological system negatively. Styrofoam harms animals scavenging for food from landfills. Styrofoam products normally easily break apart into small pieces that can choke animals. There is an alternative – foam packaging. Polyurethanes are non-toxic to the environment as they break down, and do not contain BPA’s or other chemicals which can interfere with endocrine systems. The minimal effects on the environment will make this polymer even more desirable as we become increasingly environmentally conscious
